Una River. Photo Bahrudin Bandic

Although it is one of the most important river ecosystems in this part of Europe, the Una River still lacks adequate protection. Significant parts of its middle course in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as a smaller section flowing through Croatia, remain unprotected, increasing pressure on the entire Una basin. If the initiative to establish a cross-border national park is accepted, the situation could change.

Like many others of Europe's last free-flowing rivers in the Balkan region, the Una is in permanent danger of being destroyed by a series of hydro dams. It is one of the few last rivers in the world with a healthy, wild Hucho population and an amazing fishery. For Bosnian guide Anes Halkic, the Una is not just a river. It is his life.
